TYPES OF DEOXIDIZERS

The most commonly used acid solutions for deoxidizing are nitric acid, sulfuric acid-based. The nitric acid and sulfuric acid-based solutions are interchangeably used as deoxidizers. Nitric acid can act as an autocatalytic and also slowly attack aluminum. Because of these abilities, nitric acid-based deoxidizers are most commonly used.

Another type of deoxidizer is a hydrofluoric acid-based deoxidizer. This type of deoxidizer is preferred for the parts that are prepared by a process like shot peening, blasting, or casting.

DEOXIDIZER APPLICATIONS

There are so many cases where aluminum surfaces can be prepared using deoxidizers before any surface treatment process. Deoxidizers can be used in a variety of ways to help prepare aluminum surfaces for subsequent processing and to help salvage parts that have failed final inspection. As mentioned, they are appropriate for

  • Cleaning with little or no etching.
  • Desmutting or as a neutralizing rinse after alkaline etching.
  • Removal of oxide, mill scale, corrosion products, heat-treatment scale or welding fluxes.
  • Etching to increase surface area.
  • Heavy-duty deoxidizing for castings.
  • Light-duty deoxidizing.
