Ferro Molybdenum
Ferro Molybdenum is an alloy which is formed by combining Iron & Molybdenum. Ferro Moly is a hardening agent & is found in many alloy steels. Molybdenum prevents corrosion in Stainless steel and when mixed with Iron, it also hardens & strengthens into austenite. The alloy is produced by heating/melting a mixture of Molybdenum Oxide & Iron. It can be produced in an Induction/Arc furnace or by aluminothermic reaction. It is added to Molten steel before casting. Ferro Molybdenum comes in many grades, but the Molybdenum content mostly varies between 60 - 75%. It is not classed as a hazardous good for transit.
PROPERTIES OF FERRO MOLYBDENUM
It is mainly used as an additive in several amorphous metals production that results in new alloys with desirable properties. It is listed in the top 5 melting-point metals. It can be found in many heat-treatable alloy steels. In stainless steel, this ferro alloy prevents corrosion. When combined with iron, this ferro alloy strengthens and hardens into austenite. This versatile ferro alloy is also used in several high-strength low alloys. The beneficial properties of this ferro alloy make it useful in cast irons, super alloys and high-speed tool steels. When it is added to any material, it improves properties, like ferrite strength, corrosion resistance, weldability and wear resistance. It can be used for creating a protective film over other metals.
APPLICATION OF FERRO MOLYBDENUM
The largest application area of ferromolybdenum is in the manufacture of ferrous alloys. Based on the range of molybdenum content, ferromolybdenum can be applied in the manufacture of machine tools and equipment, military hardware, refinery tubing, load-bearing parts and rotary drills.
Ferromolybdenum is also used in cars, trucks, locomotives and ships. Ferromolybdenum is added to stainless and heat-resisting steels that are used in synthetic fuel and chemical plants, heat exchangers, power generators, oil-refining equipment, pumps, turbine tubing, ship propellers, plastics and inside acid storage containers.
Tool steels that contain a higher percentage of ferromolybdenum are used in high-speed machining parts, drill bits, screwdrivers, dies, cold work tools, chisels, heavy castings, rolls, cylinder blocks, ball and rolling mills, piston rings and large drill bits.
